Jubilee Family Celebrations

Jubilee Family Celebrations: Saturday 26 May, 1:30pm—4:30pm, in church, with the following events:

Cake baking competition with 4 categories – Victoria sandwich, scones, decorated cakes with a Jubilee theme and an under 18′s section. The competition will be judged by Holly from The Cake Fairy shop on Warner Street in Accrington. Church will be open from 12.30pm for entries to be brought in
Bling swop – bring your unwanted bling and take home something new
1950′s / Jubilee fancy dress contest for all ages
Face painting
Games and activities throughout the afternoon for all ages
Various competitions
Display of ‘how life was in the 50′s’ old photos and memorabilia welcome on loan
Cream teas served in the church lounge
Prizes for cake competition and best fancy dress

In the evening we will be holding a 1950′s/ Jubilee themed family quiz with supper, commencing at 7:00pm in the Bay Horse pub, children of all ages welcome

On Sunday 27th May we will take the church children to plant 60 bulbs in the church garden

Messy Church

Following the tremendous success of our Messy Church event on Shrove Tuesday, we’d like to invite you to our next event to be held on Maundy Thursday.

The emphasis of Messy Church is about learning about God in a fun and creative way, and about families enjoying quality time together. There will be lots of activities, games and singing.

Everyone will be invited to stay for a meal at 5.30pm.

A Flapping Good Time…

On Shrove Tuesday, St John’s held a ‘Messy Church’. Not quite as untidy as it sounds, Messy Church is a term used for a non-traditional form of
worship, with families learning about Jesus, meeting together and enjoying activities, food and worship. Around 30 children and adults enjoyed paper pancake racing, crafts, worship and singing and some very yummy pancakes! Many thanks to Sue Witts, the diocesan childrens’ work co-odinator, and the volunteers from St John’s who helped organise the event

Use Lent Well

Try one or more of these suggestions:

READ – we have learnt lots from the books of 1 Kings and 2 Kings of late. We have seen time and time again that God’s people kept getting into a mess because they forgot and didn’t look to God’s word. So lets learn from their mistakes – not repeat them! So make an extra effort to read a bit of the Bible. Try one or more of these suggestions: Read a Psalm a day, or one chapter from a gospel. Sign up to the android and iphone Bible Apps that will give you a verse-a-day. Use the ‘Word for the Week’ posted on our web page or on the front page of the notice sheet.

PRAY – The best thing we can do to see God’s kingdom purposes fulfilled amongst us is to pray. Please use the prayer section on the notice sheet. I have found that using prayer diaries from different mission agencies (including the ones we support as a church) have really helped me get excited about prayer AND have stopped me becoming self centred and narrow in my understanding of where and how God is at work. If you would like a copy of Care, Mission Aviation Fellowship, Open Doors, Tear Fund prayer diaries, then please help yourself to a copy from the Fair Trade stall in the lounge.

PURGE – What is stopping us from putting God first/in the centre? Where are we asking God to share his throne with other things? When and how are we worshipping other things as gods? (A wise comment from the 8.00am congregation service – people treat everything as gods except God!). Why not keep reading through the 10 Commandments and Jesus elaboration of them (in the Sermon on the Mount – Matthew chapters 5-7) to see if God is pointing something out that you need to take action about so that you would learn to live freely and lightly.

The Vicar’s letters will now be posted on the web page every other month. Hopefully they’ll contain something to get you pausing, thinking and maybe even changing the way you live and believe so that we all might know more of the goodness of God.

APCM & Lunch

The APCM will take place on Sunday 22^nd April. We are looking for church members to stand as PCC members, wardens, treasurer and secretary. If you would like to know more about any of these roles then please speak to one of the current wardens or PCC members.

We will gather as ONE church family for Morning Worship at 10:00am, to which all members of the 8.00am congregation and the 10.15am congregation are most welcome to attend. We aim to begin the APCM at 11.00am and follow it by a church family meal together starting at about 12.30pm.
